Congrats Steven and Lisa

Looks like you took my advice :)
Dell + Ubuntu = ?
The Dell and Ubuntu deal was announced a while back and to be honest I’m pumped about it yet a little scared at the same time. I’ve been using Ubuntu for some time now and I’ve said many in the past it’s the most user-friendly Linux distribution out there. My sentiment is shared by a lot of other people too so that it’s a comforting to know that an easy to use Linux distribution will be the guinea pig.
To better understand my fear we have to break down users into categories. While there is no official break down, these are mine:
- Grandma
- Teenager
- Adult
- Geek
The Grandma knows what a computer is but if she has to spend more than 5 minutes doing something she’s going to get flustered and give up. Grandmas check their email, write a document, and like to see photos of their kids via the “interweb”. Grandmas will go to the “not so” Best Buy or Dell and get the biggest piece of crap that is way too much computer for them. Ask them how big their hard drive is and they’ll give you a blank stare and eventually make a shape of an ‘L’ with both hands and hold them up to make a rectangle.
HD = 64
Why? Why do big corps have to pull this crap? Microsoft announced that if you own a 32bit copy of Vista you won’t be able to play HD content. Thus, they are once again forcing everyone to upgrade to a 64bit computer. First there was the hardware specs for Vista which alone would force easily half the existing market to upgrade. Now if you want to play HD movies (Blue Ray or HDDVD) you have to have a 64bit computer. Read more »
Slow News Day
You know it’s a slow news day when CNN has the Bush-Blair tape on the FRONT PAGE!!!! He said the “shit”, get over it people! Now go and tell mommy and daddy. This is why I hardly watch the news. Always making something out of nothing, and showing more of the bad than the good.
Cocaine Pringles
I read about this the other day and thought I would share. Some people will do anything to sell drugs. I will give him some credit though, that was pretty clever.
It’s a series of tubes
It’s really hard to explain how the “interweb” works. Very technical stuff really. The “interweb” is a series is tubes. Thank you Senator Ted Stevens for that wonderul definition of the internet and how it works…moron. It’s people like this that give senators, represenatives, and the likes a bad name. If you don’t know what you’re talking about or voting on, don’t speak or vote. http://blog.wired.com/27BStroke6/?entry_id=1512499
Google Spreadsheets
Google has announced Google Spreadsheets. Like most of their online programs it starts out as beta and you must apply (enter an email) to get in. I just got my confirmation email, loaded it up and OMG!!! This thing if freaking awsome! It does everything that the average Excel user needs. Sorting, suming, counting, word wrap, highlighting, etc. I dont’ see any ways to produce graphs (Web based people…) but this thing rocks. I’ve uploaded a simple spreadsheet, played around with it, and downloaded it back to the computer. No problems so far. Now all we need is Google Writer (Word) and Google Presenter (Power Point) and we’re set.
I Guess I’m Vista Ready…
Microsoft has recently updated their main page for Windows Vista. Before I go into too much detail let me all remind you that I’ve played around with their Beta copies of Vista on a 999MHz Processor with 768MB PC133 RAM, 20GB hard drive and a 64MB Radeon 9600. With that said I should qualify for the basic version of Windows Vista. We’ll let me just say that I hope for their sakes that they have made some drastic improvements. With those specs I was crawling!!! The beta versions I was messing with didn’t have the full Areo theme going but did have some transparent windows by default. That same box (same specs and all) is now my Gentoo workstation. It r0×0rs my b0×0rs. I do have another box that more than meets the requirements for premium. So I guess I’m ready though you’ll have to pardon me if I don’t seem too sure….
Linux Hater
I was reading The Register as I do every day and I stumbled across this article. “ShellyTheRepublican” gives here obviously pro Microsoft Republican extremist and uninformed opinion of Linux and any other non Microsoft OS. Personally, I found it hilarious. The blog has been flamed enough if you read it and want to comment, there are over 500 comments, but still, I thought you might enjoy.
