The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Last night Steph and I went to go see The Chronicles of Narnia. I knew nothing about the series except that it was written by C.S. Lewis, a Christian author. Steph on the other hand has read most of the books a long time ago. IMHO the movie was well done and worth seeing. It reminded me a lot of the Lord of the Rings movies with the mythical creatures and the whole good versus bad theme. One thing however that stood out the most was the direct symbolism to Christianity. As I mentioned earlier, C.S. Lewis is a Christian author so I expected some symbolism however there was more symbolism in this movie that I expected.

Spoilers ahead, read at your own risk!

The Lion, Aslan, is a direct symbolical representation of Jesus Christ. Aslan is a noble and humble king with knowledge beyond his years. He even sacrifices himself for the traitor Edmond who was tricked by the Witch. Aslan is ridiculed, humiliated, and then killed having done no wrong. He did all this willingly to save Edmond. That act is a direct reference to Jesus. Jesus was beaten, humiliated, and suffered an agonizing death, having done wrong. Why, he did it because he loves you. Like Jesus, Aslan too rise from the dead.

The Witch was very much a reference to the devil. Unlike the Lord of the Ring series, the Witch seems to be a nice person offering much to Edmond and tricking him to thinking that she is a good person. In the Lord of the Ring series Sauron is just a bad guy, end of story. The Witch, like the devil, is a vile being that can easily tempt you if you’re not careful. Also, the Witch’s minions looked like demons consisting of orcs, trolls, chimeras, and miniatures. Aslan’s minions were elves, centaurs, and griffins.

Go see the movie, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Provided your movies experience was better than ours. Crying babies and about a 10 minute glitch in the sound where we were listening to nothing but the crying babies! I love kids but why bring a baby to the movie theaters?!
